Kitewing Skimbat 4.8
Kitewing Skimbat 4.8

Successor to the IV8, the Skimbat 4.8 has influenced and inspired sailors since its inception. Except for a few subtle changes made to enhance the original design, it is much the same as the beloved original introduced in Helsinki many years ago.
The standard Skimbat 4.8 sail is Dacron®. The Dacron® 4.8 sail is a versatile sail that can be stowed on the frame. A limited number of monofilm sails are still available as an option. The monofilm sail is a bit more stable, but requires more maintenance than the Dacron® sail. Monofilm sails are popular with racing sailors and speed sailors.
The Skimbat 4.8 comes with a “standard” Kitewing frame, a design that is shared with the 5.5 Dacron wing, but with different length front-tube extensions and battens. The Skimbat's boom and Y-tubes are constructed from EVA-coated aluminum for soft grip and insulation. The front tubes of the “standard” frame are composite fiberglass tubes used in combination with the proprietary Kitewing Y-Joint and Front Tube Extensions.
Stiff and lightweight carbon fiber composite front tubes are available as an optional upgrade to the “standard” frame. The stiff carbon tubes are about .27 kg. / 8 oz. lighter than the fiberglass composite tubes. The stiff tubes are a significant weight and inertia savings, but they make the wing less forgiving in heavy air. The wing will react quickly to inputs; it will not twist or depower as quickly as the standard frame does.
